The Importance of Grammar
How important is grammar? In today’s modern world of autocorrect and spell check, we’ve become lazy when it comes to grammar. We rely on technology to correct our spelling, rearrange our punctuation, and alert us of mistakes with a squiggly red line.
But autocorrect and spell check don’t catch every misstep. Being well-versed in proper grammar not only makes it easier to communicate with one another, it builds our credibility. Even a simple grammar mistake casts a shadow over your messaging. Your words become less meaningful because a typo or misused word stands out above everything else.
When we’re young, grammar is commonplace as we learn, research and write formal papers. We triple check our spelling, dot the I’s, cross the T’s, and then turn in the paper and never look back. But grammar is so much more than essays. It’s a part of our everyday routine. It is present in the simple emails we send to employers, the proposals we create for prospects, and the Facebook posts we draft for clients.
There are so many opportunities to stand out with proper punctuation, stellar spelling, and correct contractions. Use these opportunities to make a positive impression, not a negative one. Reread that email before you hit send, print and proof that important proposal, and read your Facebook post out loud.
Whether you’re comfortable with it or not, grammar isn’t going anywhere. And unfortunately, you may only have one chance to make an impression – so make it a good one.
